Snow in East Virginia

"Snow in East Virginia" is dedicated to composer, pianist, and watercolor artist Kenneth Frazelle. Ken and I share a common love of Appalachian Folk Music, which imbues and informs much of our respective work. 

This diffuse and tangential meditation on the traditional tune "East Virginia" (also known as "East Virginny" and "East Virginia Blues") is a nod to Ken's setting of the same tune from his voice and piano collection Appalachian Songbook. Near the end of the piece, I briefly quote Ken's harmonization of the melody, which alternates hauntingly between D minor and D major.
